4,9/10

December, 2022

“Waking up is painful. Another day to live, to exist in my poor existence of continuing to exist. I can’t die.

Life chained us together. I am cursed to dream of beautifully unfulfillable dreams. I wish for the one thing I can´t have. Death.

I go to sleep.”

4,9/10 was born out of a need to claim space for mediocre artists, within capitalist societal systems. The work engages with the conflicts between oneiric hope, ambition and expectations of the self and the inevitable obsession, masochism and unfulfillment; it seeks to expose the inner discourse of artists-in-the-making and its impact on their bodies.

In the piece, the body and the conscience, the action and the intention, disconnect, and the performers each personify an element of these dualities. In its frontality and crudeness, it mirrors the audience’s dialogue with themselves, confronting their self-perception.

The construction and refinement of movement in this project revolves around building contrasts between the two physicalities, through variations of tension, amplitude and agency, thus defining and separating each role. With poetry and narration as its main pillars, the original text becomes visual and grotesque, using the body as auxiliary. There is an ongoing tension between morality and social values that prevents itself from imploding by means of satire, humor and degradation.

The piece was created as a part of a Duet Project during Pedro and Nara´s studies at the Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten and was performed at the Academie voor Theater en Dans in December 2022. The artists later revisited the performance in 2025.
