Is it wrong not to be special?

February, 2022

When he opened his eyes he saw what he had done. His dismembered self forever broken, unattachable.

— “If I stretch my arms around the globe, will I be allowed a touch of life?”

Is it wrong not to be special is a solo dance-theater performance born from the artist’s first research on The Mediocre.

Focused on the weight of expectations as an immigrant artist, the performer constructs and deconstructs its body beyond the mind’s consent out of fear that ceasing to move would also mean ceasing to become exceptional. Haunted by the thought that as long as he works hard, anything is achievable, he endlessly searches for it´s nature given talent as a way to escape the mediocrity he believes he´s been cursed with.

The piece was created as a part of a Solo Project during Pedro´s studies at the Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten and was performed at the Academie voor Theater en Dans in February 2022. The artist later revisited the performance in 2023 withIs it wrong not to be special (reinvented).
