Is it wrong not to be special? (reinvented)

March, 2023

“I was only a bystander with the mind of a hero”

Is it wrong not to be special (reinvented) is a solo dance-theater performance developed in 2023 from the original Is it wrong not to be special? 2022

Born from the pressure of success that builds upon us as we grow in society, the performance looks to expose the pain behind the mask of “failing until you make it”. Driven by the idea that one can achieve anything they want as long as they keep working hard. The artists finds that this builds behind it, not a fear of a failure, but a fear of rest. To “not make it” means only that you have not worked hard enough, anything can be changed even your body. A fear of taking pauses or procrastinating creates a guilt trip machine inside each person.

We are told that we can change anything if we work hard, but what happens when you can´t change? Will you blame yourself because you didn´t work hard enough? The piece calls out to the absurdity of denying that human beings are conditioned.

The piece was performed at the Nassauker in Amsterdam on March 18th 2023.
